Shetland's roads are good and driving is relatively stress-free (but look out for the occasional stray sheep or Shetland pony!).

Frequent Inter-Island car ferries operate between the islands and the mainland. There are several car-hire firms and scheduled bus services operate throughout the mainland and some of the larger islands.

Bicycles can be hired from Lerwick. Some of the outer islands are served by passenger ferries and inter-island flights. Follow the links below for more details, prices and timetables.

Directflight (under contract to Shetland Islands Council) operate a comprehensive inter-island service using BN Islander aircraft, famous for their ability to land in isolated areas.
