It is no accident that Shetland has attracted sailors of all types for thousands
of years. Its position at the cross-roads between the North Sea and the North
Atlantic, between Scandinavia, Faroe, Iceland, mainland Britain and the New
World plus numerous safe inlets, voes, harbours and anchorages, especially
on the East side, make Shetland an ideal stop-over or destination for the
enthusiastic sailor.
Lerwick harbour was a port of call for the 1999 Cutty Sark
Tall Ships Race; each year in May over 50 Norwegian yachts arrive to
compete in the Shetland-Bergen Race and participants in the Annual
Round-Britain Yacht Race enjoy a brief respite in Shetland before sailing South
again. In addition, many hundreds of pleasure craft from all over the
world visit Shetland each year just because they like it here.
